Choosing the Right Tiny Theologians Resources for Your Child's Age

One of the questions we hear most often at Tiny Theologians is, "Which resources should I start with if my child is ____ years old?"

It's a great question, because children don't learn in the same way at every stage of development! :) The way a two-year-old processes information is very different from the way an eight-year-old thinks about the world, asks questions, or engages with Scripture.

That's why we've intentionally designed our resources with childhood development in mind! As parents, we don't want to overwhelm our children by asking them to engage with concepts that are beyond their ability to understand.

But we also don't want to underestimate them or miss opportunities to invite them into deeper conversations about God. Instead, we want to meet them where they are and then gently invite them "further up and further in", as C.S. Lewis beautifully described in The Chronicles of Narnia (a personal favorite).

When children are very young, discipleship often begins with simply reading Scripture together. Bright colors, engaging illustrations, and familiar images capture their attention and help them develop positive associations with God's Word.

As children grow, they become capable of memorizing refrains, catechism-style responses, and foundational truths. They may not fully understand every concept they're learning, but these truths become pegs on the wall—places where deeper understanding can be hung as they mature.

As children continue to grow, they're able to wrestle with increasingly complex theological concepts. They can write, reflect, compare ideas, and ask bigger questions.

  • Can we trust the Bible?
  • Why do we believe in a God we cannot see?
  • How do we know the gospel is true?

These questions have answers, and we want to help children learn how to think deeply and biblically as they grow!

Every Tiny Theologians resource was created with this developmental progression in mind. Our goal isn't simply to give children more information. Our goal is to help them know God, love His Word, and grow into mature disciples of Christ.

Ages 0–4: Building Foundations

The earliest years are all about exposure, repetition, and delight.

At this stage, children thrive when they hear Scripture regularly, interact with engaging illustrations, and begin learning simple truths about who God is.

Ages 5–7: Growing in Understanding

Around this age, many children are beginning to read and write independently.

This is a wonderful time to encourage them to interact more directly with Scripture.

The Gospel Changes Everything is another excellent resource for this stage. Through 30 family devotions, it helps families walk through the story of the gospel together.

And don't put away those ABC cards just yet! The concepts in these resources continue to deepen, making them valuable long after children have memorized the basics.

Ages 7–12: Thinking More Deeply

By age seven, many children are ready to explore theology in greater depth.

This is the age when questions become more complex, curiosity increases, and children begin connecting ideas across Scripture.

One Resource for the Whole Family

There's one resource we recommend regardless of your children's ages: Everyday Discipleship Cards.

We intentionally designed these cards for the entire family.

Each card includes age-appropriate discipleship questions so that every member of the family can participate in the conversation.

  • Pull out a card at the dinner table.
  • Keep a set in the car.
  • Use them while waiting in the pickup line.
  • Invite everyone—including Mom and Dad—to answer the question.

When parents model conversations about Jesus, they create a culture in which faith becomes a natural and joyful part of everyday life.

Growing Alongside Your Children

The beautiful thing about discipleship is that it isn't a race. Children grow one stage at a time, and God, in His wisdom, designed them that way! Our role isn't to push them along further out of anxiety (I've been guilty of this!), but to faithfully place truth before our children, answer their questions, read Scripture together, and continue inviting them deeper into the heart of Christ.
