What Is a Jesse Tree? A Simple Guide for Christian Families
If you’ve spent any time looking for Christian Advent traditions for your family, you may have come across the idea of a Jesse Tree. Maybe you’ve seen beautiful ornaments hanging from a branch or a small tree, each one decorated with a different biblical symbol. But what exactly is a Jesse Tree—and what does it have to do with Christmas?
A Jesse Tree is an Advent tradition that helps families trace the story of Scripture from creation all the way to the birth of Christ. Instead of beginning the Christmas story with Mary, Joseph, and the manger, a Jesse Tree takes us all the way back to the beginning and helps our children see that the whole Bible has been moving toward the coming of Jesus.
And that makes it one of my favorite ways to celebrate Advent with kids!
Why Is It Called a Jesse Tree?
The name comes from Isaiah 11:1:
“A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse. From his roots a Branch will grow and bear fruit.”
Jesse was the father of King David, and God had promised that a King would come through David’s family line whose kingdom would last forever. By the time Isaiah was writing, however, David’s royal line looked more like a chopped-down tree than a flourishing kingdom.
But God had not forgotten His promise.
Isaiah promised that a new shoot would grow from Jesse’s family tree. The promised King was still coming! And hundreds of years later, Jesus was born into the family line of David, fulfilling God’s promises and arriving as the King His people had been waiting for.
That image of a tree growing from Jesse’s roots is where we get the name Jesse Tree.
How Does a Jesse Tree Work?
Each day of Advent, your family reads a portion of Scripture and adds an ornament to your Jesse Tree. Each ornament represents a person, event, or promise from the biblical story.
You might begin with creation and an ornament representing the world God made. Then you move through stories like Noah and the flood, God’s promises to Abraham, the exodus, the giving of the law, and the kingdom of David. As Christmas gets closer, the readings begin to focus more directly on the promises of a coming Savior until, finally, you arrive at the birth of Jesus.
The ornaments give young children something tangible to connect with each story, while the daily readings help them begin to understand how those individual Bible stories fit together.
Why We Love the Jesse Tree
One of the most important things we can teach our kids about the Bible is that it is one big story.
Noah’s ark isn’t an isolated story. Abraham isn’t simply a story about having faith. David and Goliath isn’t merely a lesson about being brave. These stories belong to the unfolding story of God’s plan to redeem a people for Himself through Jesus Christ.
A Jesse Tree helps children see those connections.
It also teaches them something incredibly important about Christmas: Christmas was always God’s plan.
Jesus’ birth was not God improvising after things went wrong. From the earliest pages of Scripture, God was revealing His plan of redemption. He made promises, preserved His people, established His covenant, sent prophets, and prepared the way for His Son.
Then, at exactly the right time, Jesus came.
Start a Jesse Tree Tradition This Advent
You don’t need to make Advent complicated for it to be meaningful. A few minutes around the dinner table, a short passage of Scripture, and one ornament hung on the tree can become a simple daily rhythm that points your family toward Christ.
That’s exactly why we created the Tiny Theologians Jesse Tree. It gives families everything they need to walk through the story of Scripture together throughout Advent, helping kids understand not only that Jesus came, but how the whole story of the Bible was pointing toward His coming.
By Christmas morning, your tree will be full of ornaments—but more importantly, your children will have spent the season watching God’s promises unfold from Genesis all the way to Jesus.
And that is a story worth telling every Christmas.
