Why Theology Isn’t Just for Grown-Ups (And How to Start Early)
When we hear the word “theology,” we might picture dusty textbooks, long sermons, or seminary classrooms. But theology isn’t just for grown-ups—it’s for kids, too. In fact, the word theology simply means “the study of God.” And what could be more important for our kids than knowing who God is and what He’s done?
From their earliest days, our kids are already forming beliefs about God. They’re soaking up what they hear at home, in church, and from the world around them. Whether we realize it or not, our children are already doing theology—it’s just a matter of whether it’s grounded in truth.
1. Kids Ask Big Questions
Children are some of the best theologians around. They ask questions like:
“Did God make the stars?”
“Why did Jesus have to die?”
“Is God still with me when I’m scared?”
These aren’t throwaway questions. They’re theological questions—deep, important ones. When we take time to answer thoughtfully and point our kids to God’s Word, we’re laying a strong foundation for their faith.
2. Early Theology Builds Lifelong Faith
Starting young helps shape a biblical worldview before other influences take root. The more kids understand about God’s character—His holiness, love, justice, mercy—the more they can trust Him in life’s ups and downs. Theology gives our children a framework for understanding who they are, who God is, and how they fit into His big story.
3. You Don’t Have to Be a Scholar
You might feel unqualified to teach theology to your child—but here’s the good news: you don’t have to have all the answers. You just need to be willing to learn together. Read the Bible. Use simple definitions. Talk about who God is while you drive, cook, or tuck your kids into bed. Your everyday rhythms are full of opportunities to teach theology.
4. Start with Simple Truths
Begin with the basics:
-
God made everything.
-
We are sinners who need a Savior.
-
Jesus died and rose again to rescue us.
-
The Holy Spirit helps us follow God.
Tools like flashcards, puzzles, books, and songs can make these truths stick in fun, age-appropriate ways.
Theology isn’t just for grown-ups—it’s for little hearts, too. And when we start early, we give our kids a lifelong gift: the joy of knowing God.
