Why Your Toddler Needs to Know God Is Holy

Teaching big truths to little hearts—starting with God’s holiness

When we think about teaching theology to toddlers, we usually start with God’s love—and rightly so. God’s love is powerful, comforting, and deeply personal. But there’s another foundational truth that our little ones need to know just as much: God is holy.

It might sound like a big concept for small children, but it’s actually one of the most important truths we can teach them early. Here’s why:

1. God’s Holiness Helps Kids Understand Who He Really Is

Toddlers are constantly learning what words mean, and it’s important that the word “God” comes to mean something more than just “nice” or “powerful.” When we say that God is holy, we’re teaching our kids that God is set apart—completely perfect, completely good, and completely unlike anyone else.

This helps build a solid foundation for everything else they’ll learn about Him. God isn’t like their favorite superhero or a really nice grown-up. He’s altogether different—worthy of awe, worship, and obedience.

2. God’s Holiness Shows Them Why Sin Matters

Even little ones can understand the concept of right and wrong. They know what it means to disobey or to hurt someone’s feelings. But why does sin matter so much? Why do we need forgiveness?

When we teach that God is holy, we’re helping toddlers understand that sin separates us from God, not just because God is strict, but because He is perfectly pure. This lays the groundwork for the good news of the gospel: we need a Savior, and Jesus came to bring us back to God.

3. God’s Holiness Points to His Beauty and Goodness

Holiness might sound like a scary concept to a toddler, but it’s actually beautiful. God’s holiness means He is never unkind, never unfair, never wrong. He is completely trustworthy. Teaching your child that God is holy helps them see that God is good in every single way.

You can talk about this during everyday moments:

  • “God is holy, so He never makes mistakes.”

  • “God is holy, so He always does what is right.”

  • “God is holy, and that makes Him the best King ever!”

4. You Can Start Small

Teaching your toddler that God is holy doesn’t mean giving them a theology lecture. Start with simple phrases and everyday repetition:

  • “God is perfect.”

  • “God is always good.”

  • “There’s no one like God!”

Use songs, books, and visual tools to reinforce these truths. At Tiny Theologians, we design resources like our ABCs of Theology Cards and Attributes of God Puzzle to help little hearts learn who God is—one truth at a time.

Your toddler doesn’t need to wait until they’re older to begin knowing God. They can start now—with simple words, loving conversations, and big truths spoken over them again and again. And one of the best places to begin? God is holy.
